Like so many people, I am prone to periods of feeling low so I understand how debilitating the dark times can be. Anyone who has suffered through mental illness in the past will have gained some knowledge as to what their own ‘trigger’ or ‘tell’ signs are. This is a crucial time to try to prevent yourself from sinking beneath the waves.
Here’s my top 5 ways to try to put a stop to these dark moments before they become more turbulent – a virtual life raft
1 Eat well
You need to deliver nutrients to your body and your brain to be able to cope with feelings associated with depression. There are loads of mood-boosting foods so it’s worth doing a little research when you are feeling good if you know that that you are prone to feeling down. There are tendencies to either binge eat or struggle to eat at all when you’re feeling out of control. If you can nourish yourself with regular and balanced foods, you will be doing what you can to heal yourself from the inside out. Eating well can also help to reduce the length and frequency of attacks.
2 Get up, take a walk outside, get some air
When you’re feeling really blue this can feel like trying to move the earth. Try to listen to your body and acknowledge that you feel crap but also tell yourself that you are ok. Take it slow and be kind to yourself. Even if you only manage a few steps around your own garden you will have broken what can become a damaging cycle of depression.
3 Move your body, the most fun way is to get some loud tunes on and have a little dance around
The endorphins that are released when you move around and get your heart pumping are the best! Combine this with some of your favourite songs and it’s hard to keep the smile from your face – don’t worry, let it all go and shake it off – no one’s watching!
breathe deeply
4 Take a moment to breathe
If everything is really getting on top of you, a really useful mental exercise is to focus on your breathing. This is a well-known mindfulness technique and has been practised in yoga for years. It’s the simplest thing but it does require some effort. Take a minute to bring your attention to your breath then inhale deeply for 6 counts and exhale just as deeply for 6 counts. Repeat this 6 times. Try to visualise all the stale air that has been stuck at the bottom of your lungs being expelled from your body and taking with it all the negative energy that has been building up.
5 Reward yourself with little treats to acknowledge small achievements
Allow yourself whatever gives you pleasure. If these things are deemed ‘unhealthy’ by society then indulge in just a small amount. If all you have managed is to crawl out of bed and stand up straight, that is progress and should be rewarded! Life really is too short to deny yourself what makes you happy. Be kind to yourself and affirm to yourself “I’m ok, just as I am”
Thanks, great article.
