Why be dull?

Bitter or sweet, the greatest, most powerful and moving art, music and literature are born from love.  So what is it about the human condition that unlocks such creativity and why does ‘love’ both wonderful and torturous inspire this?  I have a feeling that this is a nearly impossible question to answer but I know from personal experience that my own creative outpourings are connected to love in some way.  (It would be great to have your thoughts on this if you want to leave a comment!)

Love life in colour!

My pre-school age daughter came home from nursery with a drawing of our family that she had made.  This is not unusual and I’m sure many a fridge is donned with the artistic talents of our little ones but I am fascinated by the freedom and expression that children are able to show in the early years.  How many teenagers complain that they ‘can’t draw’ when actually all it takes is a mark on a page and you can?  This might be a discussion for another day…

I’m fairly certain that my daughter’s knowledge of the torturous aspect of romantic love is limited and so, delightfully, the love that she does know is the love of family and this is what dominates her scribblings.  What moved me most about this particular drawing was that whilst her siblings and pets were all drawn in pencil, her father and I were in colour!  Whilst my husband was in the solid, trustworthy and steady colours of nature in greens and browns, I was rainbow dowsed in every colour she could fit into my dress which made me feel super special and happy that this is the way she sees me (on that day anyway!)

It’s hard not to feel like you’re walking around in black and white most days so seeing this version of me really made me glow and if nothing else, I’m going to do my best to try to feel colourful and project this everyday.  But then again, I am just 1 mum…
